On August 27th, Unitree Robotics announced via its official WeChat account that it is committing to yearly, no-strings-attached sponsorships for a select group of “genius youth.” Per the application criteria, applicants should range from high school students to master’s degree candidates who haven’t yet graduated. The project scope is completely open-ended—anything from chip fabrication and AGI to micro-robots, controlled nuclear fusion, limb regeneration, or superconductor materials is fair game. Funding will be based on the quality of the project proposal and progress, with grants of 10,000 to 20,000 RMB distributed in phases as free sponsorship. Truly exceptional projects may receive more, with no upper limit.

UK Performs World’s First AI-Assisted Real-Time Brain Surgery
According to Xinhua News, doctors at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery in London have performed the world’s first AI-assisted, real-time brain surgery on a patient to remove a pituitary tumor. The patient has since recovered. Per a BBC report on August 26th, the patient is 48-year-old Reece Hiebert, a father of two who had always been in good health. About a year and a half ago, he suddenly collapsed and started convulsing during an after-lunch walk. After being rushed to the hospital for tests, doctors discovered an 11-millimeter non-cancerous tumor on his pituitary gland, right next to his carotid artery. As the tumor pressed against his optic nerve, his peripheral vision narrowed, and without surgical removal, it could have led to total blindness.
