Tragic news has shaken the gaming world: Vince Zampella, co-founder of the iconic game series “Call of Duty,” has passed away in a car accident. The incident occurred on December 21st in California, claiming the life of the 55-year-old gaming legend.
The news of Zampella’s passing has been confirmed by his game studio’s parent company, Electronic Arts (EA).
EA released a statement on the 22nd, saying: “This is an unimaginable loss, and we offer our deepest condolences to Vince’s family, loved ones, and everyone whose lives were touched by his work. Vince’s impact on the gaming industry was profound and far-reaching.”

According to the California Highway Patrol, the accident occurred on Angeles Crest Highway in Altadena, near Los Angeles. The incident involved a single vehicle with two occupants, resulting in one fatality – Vince Zampella.
Preliminary investigations reveal that Zampella was driving a Ferrari southbound when the vehicle suddenly lost control, crashed into a concrete barrier, and caught fire. Tragically, Zampella was trapped in the driver’s seat and unable to escape. A passenger in the vehicle was thrown out and later pronounced dead at the hospital. The passenger’s identity has not been disclosed, and the cause of the accident is still under investigation.
The gaming community is mourning the loss of Vince Zampella, with many industry professionals and players taking to social media to express their condolences. Respawn Entertainment, Zampella’s game studio, said: “Vince Zampella was a giant and a legend in the industry. His encouragement of bold creativity and trust in his team will be remembered more than his games themselves.” Infinity Ward added: “As a co-founder, Vince Zampella will always hold a special place in our history. His impact on the gaming world is immeasurable.”

According to public records, Vince Zampella co-founded Infinity Ward in 2002, which later created the “Call of Duty” series. This iconic series not only became a cultural and commercial benchmark in the gaming industry but also redefined the direction of first-person shooter games, influencing countless players and creators.
Zampella was also hailed as the “Father of Call of Duty.”
In 2010, he left Infinity Ward and founded Respawn Entertainment, which went on to develop classic games like “Titanfall,” “Apex Legends,” and “Star Wars Jedi.” In 2021, Zampella was appointed as the head of the “Battlefield” series by EA.
This September, EA announced that it had reached a final agreement to be acquired by a consortium of investors, including the Saudi Public Investment Fund (PIF), Silver Lake Capital, and Affinity Partners, in an all-cash deal valued at approximately $55 billion.
EA’s financial report before the acquisition announcement showed that the company generated $1.671 billion in net revenue in the first quarter of fiscal year 2026 (Q2 2025), with a net income of $201 million and net bookings of $1.298 billion, exceeding the company’s guidance.
