DJI Accuses Insta360’s Luna Camera of Patent Infringement, Insta360 Fires Back
On June 12, NUPIAO learned from media reports that DJI and its Osmo division filed a patent infringement lawsuit against Insta360 and its affiliates in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Texas on June 10 and 11. According to the complaint, DJI claims Insta360’s Luna series handheld gimbal cameras are stepping on two of its design patents and four invention patents. The patents in question cover tech and designs from DJI’s Osmo Pocket lineup, including core underlying tech like gimbal electromechanical control and shooting control.
DJI argues that core features of the Insta360 Luna series—like the rotating screen design, gimbal mode switching, and subject tracking—all fall squarely into the protection scope of DJI’s earlier U.S. patents. In the lawsuit, DJI is asking the court to issue a permanent injunction to stop these sales and is demanding that Insta360 hand over any ill-gotten profits, pay damages, and cover all related legal and attorney fees.
Not one to back down, Insta360 announced on June 12 that it has filed a countersuit against DJI in the U.S., involving five invention patents related to gimbal and 360-degree cameras. These cover crucial tech like gimbal stabilization algorithms, pointing control, smooth camera stabilization, motion data overlay, and panoramic video stabilization. On top of that, Insta360 has asked the China National Intellectual Property Administration to invalidate DJI’s related patent families. This marks the first time these two tech giants are duking it out over patents in an overseas market, following DJI’s domestic drone patent lawsuit against Insta360 back in March 2026.
DiDi Chuxing Gets a Name Makeover
