Meituan Says Users Hit by Mass Account Thefts Likely Fell for a New Scam
On July 30, responding to reports of multiple users losing thousands of yuan in unauthorized transactions, Meituan told news outlets that after a thorough check, it appears these users were likely tricked by a new type of telecom scam. The company is actively helping police with the investigation and has rolled out extra security measures to protect accounts.
According to Meituan, the pattern is eerily similar across all cases: scammers lure victims with promises of “easy cash for fake orders” or “high commissions,” then send a link loaded with malware. Once clicked, the scammer remotely takes over the phone, buys popular dining vouchers or attraction tickets in bulk on Meituan, and quickly flips them on second-hand platforms for profit.
Local police have already launched investigations into several cases, and Meituan is cooperating by providing login logs, order details, and redemption records to help track down the gang.
