On July 6, Kingsoft Office (688111.SH) issued a statement addressing the “WPS overcharging and backstabbing users” rumors, making it clear: WPS’s free basic features are constantly expanding, and they have never—and will never—turn an existing free basic feature into a paid one.
The company also explained that WPS membership plans have been streamlined into two categories in recent years: Super Member and Premium Member. Throughout this period, benefits for both tiers have been continuously enhanced, and no existing perk has ever been moved up to a higher‑priced tier. In the rare case where a feature was pulled due to experience, technical, or partnership reasons, WPS always gave advance notice and offered a solution.
On top of that, a handful of third‑party services and high‑cost AI office agents are offered as standalone add‑on packs or usage‑based purchases. Users can buy them as needed, and they are clearly separated from regular WPS membership benefits. Whether you buy them or not, your existing free features and member perks are completely unaffected.
“We’ll keep listening to user feedback and make improvements promptly. But for any malicious rumors or deliberate defamation, we will absolutely take legal action to protect our rights,” the statement stressed. Free features stay free, member benefits never move up, and high‑cost services are optional—these principles have held true in the past and will remain unchanged going forward.

Recently, the hashtag “Betrayed by WPS” trended on social media. Many users had complained that Kingsoft’s WPS Office was eating up a lot of C drive storage on their PCs. Some said the system disk space quietly keeps shrinking during daily use, eventually causing the computer to lag or even disrupting normal office work. Others were simply confused about how to clean up WPS cache files and stop them from hogging so much C drive space.

On June 23, NUPIAO reached out to WPS customer service about this, and a staff member told us: “The average user generally won’t run into this kind of problem during everyday use. There might be some misunderstanding about the WPS cache—it’s actually a necessary part of how the software runs, helping improve response speed, optimize loading efficiency, and make the experience smoother, especially when using cloud documents.” The representative also added that cache data is not stored permanently; the system automatically clears it on a regular basis, and it doesn’t affect device performance or user privacy.
On June 27, addressing the recent wave of complaints about “default C drive occupation and unclear cleanup entry points,” WPS said it had completed its investigation and started rolling out optimizations. The updated new version is scheduled to launch in July.
WPS admitted that cache and backup files being stored on the C drive by default, along with the not‑so‑obvious storage usage display, did cause real headaches for some heavy users. The core logic behind this optimization is to make sure that at every step—from installation to daily use—you can clearly see how much local space is being used, what can be cleaned up, and you can manage it all yourself anytime.
During installation, the new version adds a path selection option. Installation path, file backup path, and cloud document storage path are now set separately and not tied to each other, so you can decide right from the start where your files will live.
During everyday use, a new “Storage Management” module has been added to the settings page. It shows a centralized view of how much space is taken up by cache, file backups, cloud document cache, and other files—and how much can be freed up. You can clean everything with one click, and you’ll get clear feedback on the progress and results. The storage paths can also be changed freely; before making a change, the system checks the target disk’s space and permissions, and progress is displayed in real time during the process.
On June 30, Kingsoft Office responded again, saying the claim that WPS “forcibly occupies the C drive” was based on a misunderstanding. According to the company, WPS writes related data to the system’s default directories, mainly to comply with Windows application data storage standards and account permission isolation requirements—this is to keep user data secure, not a deliberate choice to target the C drive.
Regarding the rumor that “cleaning the cache requires a paid subscription,” Kingsoft Office made it clear that WPS cache cleanup and path modification features have always been free and available to all users. The paid cleanup feature circulating online is actually a member benefit called “C Drive Cleanup Master,” which can clear cache left by third‑party software and useless system images, audio, video files, and the like—its scope goes far beyond just WPS’s own data. The basic function for cleaning WPS local cache has no paywall at all, and it was never designed as a “first occupy, then charge” scheme.
Additionally, Kingsoft Office pointed out that due to Windows display rules, the “Size” you see in the folder properties of the WPS cloud drive reflects the total logical amount of cloud documents you can currently access. The actual local disk usage should be judged by the “Size on disk” figure—those two numbers shouldn’t be mixed up.
In response to accusations like “nested charges” and “turning free features into paid ones,” Kingsoft Office stressed that WPS absolutely does not turn free features into paid features. Delivering a better experience is WPS’s core mission, and free features will never become paid—this never happened in the past, and it definitely won’t happen in the future.
