Pokémon Pokopia Unlocks Tonight, and It’s Somehow the Highest-Rated Pokémon Game Ever

Let’s address the elephant in the room right away. The review embargo just lifted, and Pokémon Pokopia is currently sitting as the highest-rated Pokémon game of all time.

IGN literally just slapped a 9/10 on it.

I’ll be honest, when they first announced this, I thought it was just going to be another cheap, mobile-style cash grab. But after watching the actual gameplay footage, I am completely taking back all my trash talk. The game unlocks tonight (midnight on March 5th) exclusively on the Nintendo Switch 2. If you managed to snag the new console, it’s finally time to put it to work.

Wait, what actually is this game?

Here is the wildest part: you aren’t playing as a Pokémon Trainer. You aren’t even human.

You are a Ditto. You transform into a human and get dropped into an empty wasteland. Your job is to chop wood, smash rocks, grow crops, and build custom houses to convince wild Pokémon to move into your town. You can even learn moves from the Pokémon you befriend to speed up your farming and building.

It is basically Animal Crossing mixed with Stardew Valley, but with Pokémon. Whoever pitched this idea at Game Freak deserves a massive raise.

When can you actually start playing?

Since it’s a Switch 2 exclusive, the digital rollout is following the classic “local midnight” rule for the most part. If you pre-ordered it, check your console right now to make sure the pre-load is finished.

Here is exactly when the servers go live across the major time zones:

  • PST (West Coast US): March 4 at 9:00 PM (You guys always get the best deal, unlocking it early alongside the East Coast).

  • EST (East Coast US): March 5 at 12:00 AM Midnight.

  • GMT / CET (UK & Europe): March 5 at 12:00 AM Midnight.

  • JST / CST (Tokyo & Beijing): March 5 at 12:00 AM Midnight.

  • NZST (New Zealand): March 5 at 12:00 AM Midnight. (Yes, the old “New Zealand account trick” still works if you bought the game from their specific eShop to play it hours before everyone else).

We all know the mainline Pokémon games have been struggling lately with terrible frame rates and massive bugs. But by ditching the traditional battle mechanics and leaning entirely into a cozy, base-building farming sim on the upgraded Switch 2 hardware, it looks like they actually nailed it.

Are you staying up late to start your island tonight, or are you holding off to see what the early players say about the grind? Let me know!
