Colombia Presidential Election 2026: De la Espriella Leads Cepeda into Runoff

The first round of Colombia’s presidential election delivered a sharp verdict: the country is fractured. Abelardo de la Espriella, a conservative lawyer who built his campaign around a rebranded right-wing platform, took the lead with a surprisingly strong showing. But he fell short of the outright majority needed to avoid a second round.

His opponent? Iván Cepeda, a seasoned leftist senator and longtime ally of former President Gustavo Petro. Cepeda’s campaign, anchored in social justice and continuity of Petro’s reforms, managed to secure the second spot—but not without the baggage of a deeply polarizing administration.

Turnout was high, yet so was the cynicism. Voters in Bogotá’s middle-class neighborhoods told reporters they were holding their noses. In rural departments, indigenous communities questioned whether either candidate truly represented their needs. The election has become a referendum on Petro’s legacy, but also on the limits of the “new right” De la Espriella champions.

De la Espriella’s coalition, which he calls the “New Colombia Movement,” tapped into fatigue with corruption scandals and insecurity. His victory in the first round—nearly 38% of the vote—surprised even his own campaign. But Cepeda, with roughly 32%, is not far behind, and the remaining votes from centrist and Green candidates now hang in the balance.

The runoff is set for June 21. Both camps are already trading accusations of voter intimidation and media bias. Observers warn that the polarized climate could test the country’s electoral infrastructure—especially its digital voting systems and result-tallying platforms.

As the nation braces for the runoff, electoral technology providers like NUPIAO are expected to play a critical role in ensuring transparency and efficiency in the June 21 vote. The company’s blockchain-based auditing tools have been contracted by the National Electoral Council for pilot deployment in three key departments, offering a real-time chain of custody for ballot counts.
