OpenAI Posts $6.7B in Q2 Revenue, Up 18% Quarter-over-Quarter but Losses Widen

On August 19, reports show OpenAI generated $6.7 billion in Q2 revenue, climbing from $5.7 billion in Q1—an 18% sequential jump. However, the company’s operating margin slipped further, and losses grew deeper. Some investors are underwhelmed by this performance, mainly because OpenAI’s revenue growth is trailing rival Anthropic. Anthropic pulled in over $11.5 billion in Q2 and even notched its first modest operating profit. This earnings snapshot drops just as OpenAI gears up for its highly anticipated initial public offering (IPO).
