The DJI Pocket 4P Drops Soon: Inside DJI’s Fresh Take on Handheld Videography Tech

Recently, DJI opened up about the evolution of handheld video tech for the first time, while also tackling a bunch of burning questions—from what’s new in the 4P update, to where the Pocket line is headed next, and how they plan to handle the growing market buzz.

Handheld shooting was definitely one of last year’s biggest hardware buzzwords. After Pocket 3—often dubbed the “electronic Baotai”—struck gold, DJI found another massive growth engine beyond their drones. According to official numbers, the Pocket series just crossed 10 million units sold worldwide.

In an era where smartphone cameras can easily give DSLRs a run for their money, a tiny gimbal cam with just 12 megapixels and a 2x digital zoom somehow became a cultural phenomenon. Now, every major hardware maker is scrambling to copy what DJI pulled off.

So, where did the Pocket line actually come from? DJI spokesperson Zhang Xiaonan explains that the company started with consumer drones and slowly built out features like omnidirectional obstacle avoidance, three-axis gimbals, stable live feeds, and 4K HD cameras over several generations. That journey gave DJI a complete stack of tech, from sensors straight to the cloud. More importantly, they realized just how much portable gear speeds up the creative workflow.

Back in 2014, DJI dropped the Inspire 1, their first pro drone packed with a 4K camera and foldable landing gear. Once it hit the market, the team started asking themselves: how do we bring that freedom-of-movement gimbal tech down to earth? That question split their handheld video lineup into two distinct paths:

One path targets the professional film and TV scene with the Ronin series. It basically took cinematic camera movements that used to require pricey Steadicams and months of training, and crammed them into a single handheld rig. A standout example is the Ronin 4D, DJI’s all-in-one cinema camera launched in 2021, which has quickly become a go-to tool for production crews both here and abroad.

The other path was built for everyday creators. In 2015,driven by pure product intuition, DJI rolled out the Osmo, their very first all-in-one handheld gimbal camera. Back then, nobody had seen anything quite like it. There was no ready-made tech or supply chain to lean on, and the first gen didn’t exactly blow up. But that experience cemented a core belief at DJI: if you want serious video quality, you need a stabilizer, and an all-in-one design is the real endgame—it shouldn’t just be playing second fiddle to your phone.

From there, DJI tackled two huge technical hurdles: shrinking the gimbal mechanism and building ultra-low-power imaging systems.

Zhang mentions that the gimbal on the first Osmo was actually borrowed from the “Inspire” drone line—it was roughly the size of a duck egg. It wasn’t until the Mavic series that they managed to shrink it down to quail-egg size. Pulling that off required completely rewriting the mechanical architecture and motor control algorithms. Some folks from smartphone companies have even admitted that nailing Pocket’s core physical stabilization comes down to insane motor control precision. DJI’s deep supply chain know-how from years of drone manufacturing gives them a real edge that’s pretty tough for phone makers to simply copy.

At the same time, riding the wave of fast-moving semiconductor tech, DJI squeezed impressive battery life into a lipstick-sized body. That finally solved the early models’ main gripes: relying on a phone for power, overheating issues, and the inability to playback footage on its own.

Zhang doesn’t sugarcoat it—the first two Pocket gens definitely stumbled a bit in the dark. The original lacked a clear vision for its core use case and even toyed with a “lighter-shaped” design that plugged directly into smartphones, but they scrapped it because it couldn’t stand alone. After gen two,real user feedback sparked some fresh ideas at DJI. They switched the lens focal length from 26mm down to 20mm, added wireless mic support, and slowly started building out a full accessory ecosystem.

Then came Pocket 3, and everything clicked. The swivel screen made framing shots way easier, the background blur nailed that polished look everyone loves, and the Live Photo feature tapped right into social sharing culture. Just as the hardware finally hit peak maturity, WeChat Moments rolled out support for Live Photos—and suddenly, Pocket 3 went totally mainstream.

This year, DJI split Pocket 4 into two flavors. The standard model keeps refining Pocket 3’s winning formula, but the upcoming Pocket 4P packs a dual-camera telephoto setup and positions itself as a “pocket cinema camera anyone can pick up.”

DJI Product ManagerFang Xiao Ming points out that the biggest leap in Pocket 4P is DJI’s proprietary Gen 2 Color Science. He breaks it down like this: film’s secret sauce lies in better highlight retention, more natural texture, and richer color grading. So, DJI’s goal with their new color pipeline is to digitally recreate those film-like qualities while keeping the workflow snappy under 10-bit encoding. That balance is going to be a major selling point.

As Pocket 4P leans harder into the “cinema” vibe, people are constantly debating where its actual boundaries lie. Product ManagerFang Xiao Ming believes the range of scenarios Pocket can tackle will naturally expand—that’s just how tech evolves. But he’s quick to clarify that expanding capabilities doesn’t mean eating into other gear’s turf; it’s meant to complement it. Zhang adds that Pocket 4P still isn’t trying to dethrone pro cinema rigs. The real mission here is handing everyday creators the tools to make pro-level stuff without the steep learning curve.

When asked about Pocket’s future direction,Fang Xiao Ming sees two clear tracks. First, working within slightly looser design limits than phones allows, they’ll keep pushing the envelope on optics and sensor tech. Second, they’re doubling down on smoothing out the entire capture-to-export workflow so getting great footage feels effortless.

He drops an interesting observation: a lot of Pocket buyers end up saving far more still photos from their videos than the actual clips, mostly because getting a solid photo is just foolproof. The reason? Shooting decent video still demands a higher skill ceiling. That’s exactly the puzzle DJI wants AI to solve—making high-quality video creation accessible to literally anyone.

Competition is another elephant in the room. IDC reports show the global handheld smart camera market shipped 16.65 million units in 2025—an insane 83% jump year-over-year, with revenue cracking past 46.1 billion RMB. DJI sits comfortably at the top with a 62% market share. But let’s be real, they’re surrounded now more than ever.

By April 2026, Insta360 laid bare the specs for their Luna series, with the flagship Luna Ultra developed alongside Leica. They’re betting big on a dual telephoto setup paired with authentic Leica color science to carve out a niche. Meanwhile, both OPPO and vivo have greenlit their own handheld Pocket-style gimbal cams, both slated to drop sometime in Q4 this year.

One insider from a gimbal cam company told reporters that smartphone makers definitely walk in with serious advantages: massive distribution networks, rock-solid supply chains, and years of tuning optics, stabilization, and image processing. But stepping into this space isn’t a guaranteed win.

For starters, phone brands are used to moving hardware at razor-thin margins—or even taking losses—because they make their real money on software and services. Cameras, though, need to turn a profit on the box itself. Plus, since smartphones remain their bread and butter, it’s worth wondering whether these projects will get the internal budget they need to survive past launch day, or if they’ll just become disposable side quests.

When asked about the rising tide of rivals, Zhang’s stance is pretty straightforward: they’re“totally open to healthy competition,” and stress that DJI’s pricing strategy won’t bend to suit anyone else. As June kicks off, the handheld gimbal arena is officially heating up for the year, and the moment the world finds out how much the Pocket 4P costs is probably going to be the biggest headline of all.
